The case has moved

What has happened

The case has moved. These are its major milestones only, in the order they happened; the full record of every hearing is on the Court Proceedings page.

At each of the 12 hearings on record since further investigation was ordered, the report was not submitted and the court set a new date.

How these milestones are known: Reported: 7 · Official statement: 1. None is yet established by a court document the project holds.

What these entries establish

A reported procedural fact establishes that a filing, order or hearing took place as reported. It does not establish the truth of any allegation made in it. No court document is yet held by the project, so none of these entries is classed as a court record.

But justice is not complete

The procedural path

The procedural steps from the attack to a court’s judgment, and where this case has reached. States are given in words; there is no measure of progress.

What has not yet happened

Statements that are true on the latest reviewed record. Each is removed only when a record shows that the step has happened.

  • The CID has not submitted its further-investigation report to the court.

  • The reports held record no decision by the court to accept the charge sheet or to take cognizance of the offence.

  • The case is not recorded as sent to a Speedy Trial Tribunal.

The law adviser said on 22 December 2025 that the trial would be held under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act, 2002; no later report records the transfer. [13]

  • No charges have been framed against any accused.

  • No trial has begun, and no witness has testified at a trial.

  • There is no verdict. No one has been convicted or acquitted in this case.

Where the proceedings stand

Legal status

Where the people in the case stand

Counts derived from the individual, dated status records of the people the reports name. They are not counts of all the accused.

Named in the reports held and charged
3 — last reported 6 January 2026 [9, 1, 14]
Of them, recorded as wanted in this case
3 — last reported between 6 January 2026 and 6 July 2026 [15, 14, 16, 17]
Of them, last reported held in India, in separate proceedings
2 — last reported 5 April 2026 [18, 19]
Others named in the investigation and recorded as detained in this case
3 — last reported between 25 December 2025 and 26 July 2026 [20, 21, 22, 23]
On trial, in this case
None — no trial has begun
Convicted, in this case
None — no court has delivered a verdict

Why there is no total

The reports held do not name every accused, and no report gives a current count of all the accused who are in custody, at large or on bail. A total would mix current and historical counts, so none is given. Being named, arrested or charged is not a finding of guilt.

Each person’s status, with its history

Open questions

What remains unanswered

Only questions the record itself leaves open, each with the reason it is open. The project does not answer them by inference. Reviewed .

  1. Who planned and directed the attack?

Why it is open: No court has made any finding on responsibility. The accusations in the charge sheet have not been tested at trial, and the complainant has objected to the charge sheet. [9, 10] The project draws no conclusion of its own.

    The investigation

  2. What has the CID’s further investigation found?

Why it is open: Its report has not been submitted to the court. At the latest hearing on record, the court set a new date for it. [1]

    The CID’s report dates

  3. Will the charge sheet stand, be revised or be replaced?

Why it is open: The complainant objected to it, and the court ordered further investigation instead of deciding on it. That decision waits for the CID’s report. [10, 5]

The objection to the charge sheet

  4. Have all the accused been apprehended?

Why it is open: The Dhaka Tribune reported in June 2026 that six accused were absconding, counting the two held in India. [16] No later count appears in the reports held.

    Accused & case actors

  5. Will the two men held in India be returned to Bangladesh?

Why it is open: Bangladesh said in April 2026 that both governments had agreed to their return under the extradition treaty; in July the CID chief said Bangladesh was still waiting for India to hand them over. [24, 17]

    Across the border

  6. Has a forensic link between the recovered pistols and the shooting been established?

Why it is open: An investigation source said in December 2025 that ballistic testing would confirm it, and the Detective Branch said in January that forensic reports were among its evidence. [25, 14] No such report has been published.

    Evidence investigators described

  7. When will a trial begin, and before which court?

Why it is open: The law adviser said in December 2025 that the case would be tried under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act. The case is still at the stage of investigation. [13, 1]

Disputed

What is disputed

Claims on which one record contradicts another. Each side is listed with its source; neither is preferred.

The charge sheet accuses 17 people of involvement in the killing, and police describe Foysal Karim Masud as the alleged shooter. No court has tested these accusations.

Alleged — an allegation by Detective Branch, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, in the charge sheet; it has not been established.

Records that originate or support it

Records that refute it

Current research status: open. No record resolves it, and no court has ruled on it.

The evidence for this claim

Police say two suspects crossed into India; Indian authorities deny it

Disputed — the accounts conflict, and neither is preferred.

Records that originate or support it

Records that refute it

Current research status: open. No record resolves it, and no court has ruled on it.

The evidence for this claim

A border is not a verdict on any state

That a suspect crossed a border, or was arrested abroad, is not evidence that any government was involved in the attack. No investigating agency has alleged such involvement in any report held, and the project makes no such claim.

Why justice matters

Justice and due process

A candidate for parliament was shot in the street during an election campaign and died six days later. Whether, and how, those responsible are held to account is a matter of public interest, and the legal process that decides it should be recorded accurately and in full.

Justice, on this page, means due process: an investigation that follows the evidence, a fair trial, accountability where a court establishes it, and protection for anyone wrongly accused. It does not mean declaring anyone guilty before a court has decided. Remembrance does not replace evidence.

Justice has not been forgotten.

This record will continue to be updated as verified investigative and court developments occur.

About this record

Sources and method

How the record is compiled
Each police and court action is entered from a report of it, checked against the publication on the review date, and dated by when it happened rather than when it was reported. The same record drives this page and the timeline.
How claims are classified
Every fact carries how it is known: an official statement, a report, an allegation (with who makes it), or a dispute (with every side). “Court record” is reserved for facts checked against a court document the project holds; none is held yet. There are no scores or percentages.
How court records are used
A court record establishes what the court did — a filing, an order, a hearing — not the truth of the allegations before it. A scheduled date is shown as scheduled until a report of the day records what happened.
How corrections work
Corrections are made openly: the corrected fact is shown with a note of what was said before. Earlier records that could not be sourced are listed below as not published, with the reason.

Case record last reviewed . Anyone named on this page, or anyone with a document or a correction, can ask for a fact to be reviewed: see corrections and right of reply and the research methodology.

Not published, conflicts and gaps

Elapsed time
The two counts are whole days on the Dhaka calendar, from the dates the record gives for the attack and for his death, to the date the page was generated. They are recalculated at least hourly; the record of the case itself changes only when it is reviewed.
No live data
This page shows the reviewed record, not a live feed. The current stage, the latest development and the next known date are derived from the case record as of its last review, which is shown beside them.
Freshness
If the case record has not been reviewed for more than 30 days, the page says that the current-status records are awaiting review, instead of presenting them as current.
Scheduled dates
A date the court has set is shown as scheduled. When it passes, it is not assumed to have happened: the page says that the outcome has not yet been recorded until a report of the day is checked.
Counts not given
Counts of all accused in custody, at large or on bail are not given, because the reports held name only some of the accused. Counts from the site’s earlier, unsourced records are not used.
Questions and disputes
The questions are drawn from the canonical records of the Justice pages, and leave this page once a record answers them. Disputed claims are shown with every side; a disputed claim is never presented as established.
