Rights and credits

Every reproduced photograph is credited as its licence requires: “Photograph: [creator] / [repository] · [licence]”, with a link to the licence and to the file at its repository. Photographs under a ShareAlike licence are shared on the same terms.
Public domain. The Press Information Department states that, unless otherwise stated, media on its website are owned by the Government of Bangladesh and are in the public domain; Wikimedia Commons records each file’s PID source address.
Each photograph is served as one archive copy made from the original at its repository: resized to at most 2,000 pixels on the long edge, never enlarged, and converted to WebP, with orientation applied and embedded metadata removed. Nothing is cropped, recoloured, retouched, sharpened or generated. Thumbnails in the catalogue are the same file, scaled by the browser.
The archive does not offer its copies for download. Each record links to the original at its repository, where its creator published it and where its licence is stated.
How photographs are archived
Provenance before publication, rights before reproduction, and one faithful copy of each photograph.
- Photographs are chosen to document the record — his public life, the uprising, the demand for justice, the funeral and remembrance — not to reach a number. Several photographs of one moment are kept only when each shows something the others do not.
- Every photograph names its creator and the page where it is published, with the original file’s address and the SHA-1 its repository publishes. The original stays there, unaltered; a record without provenance is not shown.
- A photograph is reproduced only under a licence that allows it, a documented public-domain status, or written permission. News-agency and newspaper photographs, social-media posts and video thumbnails are not reproduced on the strength of being online; a photograph whose permission is unconfirmed is listed without its image.
- A person is named only when a caption, the source or a project record names them, and each record says how. No one is identified from their face. Members of the public are not named.
- The date a photograph was taken is given at the precision its record supports, with how it is known — a caption, the source, or camera metadata, which is not independent confirmation. Places are never more precise than the source gives them. The date a photograph entered the archive is kept apart.
- Photographs of wounds, of the injured in treatment, of Hadi’s body or of grieving relatives in close-up are not published, even where they are freely licensed. Children are not the subject of any photograph in the archive.
- The archive keeps one copy of each photograph, at one address, and every page that shows it reads that address from the record. A copy is never placed in several folders.
- Each original is checked against the SHA-1 its repository publishes when it is retrieved, and each archive copy is recorded with a SHA-256 hash that the site’s tests check. A matching hash shows the file has not changed since it was recorded; it does not show that what the photograph depicts is true.
- Crops, smaller copies and composites of a photograph already in the archive are not added again; where a repository holds a panel cut from a composite image, the record says so.
- A wrong caption, date, place, name, credit or link is corrected with a note saying what changed; a creator or rights holder may ask for a photograph to be withdrawn.
