His Life

The life of Sharif Osman bin Hadi

শরীফ ওসমান বিন হাদী

1993 to 2025

Before he became a national figure, Hadi’s life was shaped by a religious household in Jhalokathi, a madrasa education, political science at the University of Dhaka, years of teaching, and poems he published under another name.

A chapter of the Justice for Hadi biography, drawing on 10 published sources. Last reviewed . Skip to sources

Introduction

Before the public figure

Sharif Osman bin Hadi became known across Bangladesh during the uprising of July 2024. He was then a Dhaka University graduate in his early thirties. [1] It was through his part in the protests of that year that he first came to wider notice. [2]

He was born in Nalchity, in the southern district of Jhalokathi, the youngest of six children of a madrasa teacher. [3, 4] He was educated in the madrasa system and read political science at the University of Dhaka. [5, 2] He later worked as a teacher and a university lecturer, [2, 4] and in 2024 a book of his poems was published under a pen name. [6]

This chapter follows those years: the household he grew up in, his schooling, the university, his teaching and his writing, up to the point in 2024 at which his public life began. What he did in public life after that is told in Political Journey; the whole of his life, in brief, in the biography overview.

Nalchity Upazila, Jhalokathi District

1 · Origins

Nalchity, Jhalokathi

Hadi was born on 30 June 1993 [4] in Nalchity Upazila, in Jhalokathi District in the south of Bangladesh. [3, 4] bdnews24.com describes Nalchity as his ancestral home. [2]

Reference compilations record that he was born Osman Goni. [3] He became known as Sharif Osman bin Hadi, a name also reported as Sharif Osman Hadi and Osman Hadi. [3]

Research note

His date of birth has not yet been confirmed by a primary record, and the compilations disagree. The project’s records and one compilation give 30 June 1993; when this page was reviewed, the English Wikipedia article gave 1 January 1993. This page keeps the recorded date until the question is resolved (see the notes at the end).

ChildhoodNalchity, Jhalokathi

2 · Family and faith

A household of learning and faith

His father, Maulana Abdul Hadi, taught at a madrasa and served as a local imam. [3] Hadi was the youngest of six children. [3, 4]

Accounts of his early years describe a devout household in which religious learning and education were central. [3, 5] One compilation describes the family as a modest Muslim household. [4]

Faith remained part of how he spoke in public. His statements in later years drew on religious language, invoking God in his own words. [7] Those statements, and the ideas they carried, are set out in Speeches & Ideas; this chapter records only where that language began: in a religious household and a religious education.

Research note

Beyond these facts the sources say little about his childhood. The project has not collected recollections from his family, and it publishes nothing about his relatives beyond his father’s name and work, which are part of the public record. No photographs from these years are shown.

School yearsJhalokathi

3 · Madrasa education

Jhalakati N. S. Kamil Madrasa

Hadi was educated in the madrasa system. At Jhalakati N. S. Kamil Madrasa he passed the Alim, the higher-secondary examination of the madrasa system. [5, 4]

From the madrasa he went on to the University of Dhaka. [2] The step took him from a religious education in the south of the country to the study of political science in the capital.

Research note

The years he spent at the madrasa, and what he studied there, are not recorded in the sources held. bdnews24.com names the school where he began his education as Nesarabad Kamil Madrasa; other accounts name Jhalakati N. S. Kamil Madrasa. Whether these are the same institution, or different stages of his schooling, has not been established.

2010–11University of Dhaka

4 · University of Dhaka

Political science at the University of Dhaka

In the 2010–11 academic session Hadi joined the Department of Political Science at the University of Dhaka. [2] He went on to complete a master’s degree in the subject. [4]

Campus life

One reference profile records that he took part in campus politics and in debates during his time at the university. [4] The sources held do not say which debating societies or campus groups he belonged to, or what part he played in them.

According to bdnews24.com, his madrasa background, his language and his dress led many to assume that he belonged to Islami Chhatra Shibir, a student organisation. His colleagues told the outlet that before the July uprising he had not been involved with any political party. [2]

Research note

The record of his university years is thin and rests partly on a reference compilation. The years of his degrees, and any account of how he developed as a speaker or organiser, have not been found in the sources held, so this page does not describe them.

Working yearsUniversity of Scholars, Dhaka

5 · Teaching

Teaching

Hadi worked as a teacher. [2, 4] At one stage, bdnews24.com reports, he taught at Saifur’s, a coaching centre for English. [2]

He became a lecturer at the University of Scholars, a private university in Dhaka. [3, 2] According to Inqilab Moncho activists quoted by bdnews24.com, it was the post he held most recently. [2]

Research note

The sources differ on his department: Wikipedia places him in Business Studies, while the university’s own faculty listing, as indexed by search engines, lists a lecturer of his birth name in English; that page could not be opened to confirm it. When he joined, and how long he taught, are not recorded in the sources held.

6 · Writing

Poems under another name

Hadi also wrote. His colleagues told bdnews24.com that before the uprising he was active in the cultural sphere and had written several books. [2]

In February 2024 a collection of poems, Lavay Lalshak Puber Akash, was published at the Amar Ekushey Book Fair in Dhaka under the name Simanto Sharif. [6] Reference listings identify Simanto Sharif as a pen name of Hadi’s. [3, 4, 8]

Introducing the book, its author said the poems dealt mainly with the oppression of the East by the West, the loss of human freedom, and the want, hunger, poverty and revolt of everyday life, and also with love, with family and with care for the oppressed. (Summarised in English by Justice for Hadi from the Bangla report.) [6]

7 · As others described him

As others described him

This page does not characterise Hadi’s personality or way of life. The descriptions below were given by political figures in public after his death. They are recorded as their words, not as this project’s assessment.

“clean, honest and principled life”

— Mia Golam Parwar, secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, describing the life Hadi had lived, as reported by the national news agency BSS after Hadi’s death [9]

“fearless fighter”

— Muhammad Yunus, chief adviser of the interim government, after Hadi’s death, as reported by CNA [10]

Research note

No first-hand recollections from his family, teachers, classmates or students have yet been collected with their consent. Descriptions of his personal finances and lifestyle in the project’s research compilation carry no source and are not used.

2024: Where his public life began

By the summer of 2024 Hadi was a graduate of the University of Dhaka in his early thirties, [1] a teacher, and the author of a book of poems. [2, 6] During the uprising of July he was living in Rampura, in Dhaka, where he took part in local organising as a coordinator for the area. [3]

The uprising brought him to national attention. In the Financial Express’s account, he became one of the most prominent voices of the movement. [5] What followed — the uprising itself, Inqilab Moncho and the campaigns of 2025 — is the next chapter of his life.

About this chapter

Sources and notes

This chapter was compiled by Justice for Hadi from published news reports, profiles and analysis, two reference compilations and a bookseller’s listing. Each numbered citation points to the publication the statement rests on; the Bangla sources were read in Bangla and are summarised here in English.

Little of his early life is documented in public sources, and none of these sources has yet been through the project’s formal verification process. Where the record is thin the text says so, and where sources disagree the disagreement is set out below rather than settled silently. Descriptions of his character appear only as the attributed words of the people who gave them.

Conflicts, gaps and omissions

Date of birth
The project’s records, and the Hamariweb profile, give 30 June 1993. When this page was reviewed, the English Wikipedia article gave 1 January 1993, citing a jagonews24.com profile that could not be opened for checking. No primary record (a certificate or an official document) has yet been seen. The page keeps the recorded date and treats it as unconfirmed.
His first school
bdnews24.com says he began his education at Nesarabad Kamil Madrasa; the Financial Express and other accounts name Jhalakati N. S. Kamil Madrasa, where he passed the Alim. Search summaries of a jagonews24.com profile mention a further school in Nalchity; it is not used because the article itself could not be read.
His lectureship
The department in which he taught at the University of Scholars is given differently by different sources (Business Studies; English), and the length of the post is not recorded. Earlier project text called the post brief; that is not established, so this page does not say it.
Speaking and organising
The project’s research compilation presents his university years as the time he developed as a speaker and organiser. The source it relies on says only that he took part in campus politics and debates, so this page goes no further than that.
The poetry collection
The 2024 report of the book’s publication names its author only as Simanto Sharif. The identification of that name with Hadi comes from reference compilations and a bookseller’s listing, not yet from the publisher or his family. Colleagues spoke of “several books”; only this collection has been identified. No poems are reproduced on this page.
His family
His father’s name and work are given because they are part of the public record and explain the household he grew up in. His mother’s name appears in reference compilations and older project data; it is not published here, because it is not needed to tell his life. Reports also refer to his wife and young child. This page does not name or describe his immediate family: their privacy comes before completeness.
Photographs
No photographs are shown on this page. The project holds no photographs of his childhood, schooling, university years, teaching or writing with known provenance and permission to publish, and it does not use illustrative or reconstructed images in their place.
