The investigation into the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi
— present
A sourced record of how the killing has been investigated: the agencies, the arrests, the evidence investigators described and how each claim stands, the disputed accounts, the objection to the original investigation and the further investigation that continues.
Where the investigation stands
The case has been with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Bangladesh Police since 15 January 2026. The court has set 3 November 2026 for its report.

Date set for the CID’s further-investigation report. Not yet held. [1]
The investigation in brief
Hadi was shot on Box Culvert Road in Dhaka on 12 December 2025, according to police and eyewitness accounts. [2, 3] The next day police sources said a suspect had been identified from CCTV footage, and the government offered a reward for his arrest. [4]
The case was filed on 14 December. In the days that followed, RAB detained and arrested people close to the suspect and recovered firearms, and the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police investigated the case. On 6 January 2026 it submitted a charge sheet against 17 accused. [5, 6, 7, 8]
The complainant objected to the charge sheet, and the court gave the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation. [9, 5] In March 2026 the man police describe as the shooter and the man they say rode the motorcycle were arrested in India; Bangladesh is seeking their return. [10, 11] The CID has not yet submitted its report. [1]
An investigation identifies evidence, theories and accused persons. Investigative findings and charge-sheet allegations do not themselves establish criminal guilt; guilt is decided through the legal process, at trial. On this page, what investigators said is reported as theirs, with the date they said it.
Who has investigated
The agencies that have held or acted in the investigation, in order. No transfer is inferred where the reports do not record one.
In Bangladesh
Paltan Model Police Station, Dhaka Metropolitan Police
The shooting took place in its jurisdiction, and the case was filed there on 14 December 2025 by Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of Inqilab Moncho, with the consent of Hadi’s family, as reported. [5, 12]
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)
Detained and arrested people close to the suspect police had named, and recovered firearms in Narsingdi, handing those it held to the police. A RAB director said the investigation itself would be carried out by the police. [6, 7, 13]
Detective Branch (DB), Dhaka Metropolitan Police
Its inspector, Foysal Ahmed, was the investigating officer who sought the remand of the first people detained on 15 December 2025, [14] and who submitted the charge sheet on 6 January 2026. [8] The reports held do not say when the case passed to the Detective Branch.
Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Bangladesh Police
Given the further investigation by the court after the complainant’s objection. [5, 15] By April 2026 the investigating officer was Assistant Superintendent Abdur Qadir Bhuiyan of CID Dhaka Metro (East); other reports spell his name Abdul Quader Bhuiyan. [16]
Outside Bangladesh — a separate process
Special Task Force, West Bengal Police (India)
Arrested Foysal Karim Masud and Alamgir Hossain near the border at Bongaon, West Bengal, according to its press release as reported. [10, 17]
National Investigation Agency (NIA), India
The Sentinel reported on 5 April 2026 that a special NIA court extended the agency’s custody of the two men, who had been brought to New Delhi. [18] The reports held do not set out the Indian case’s charges in full; Prothom Alo reported in March that they were held on charges of illegal entry. [19]
The first days
This section states that Hadi was shot. It gives no detail of the injury, and there are no images.
After campaigning in the Paltan and Bijoynagar area, Hadi left in a battery-powered auto-rickshaw. At about 2:25 p.m. on Box Culvert Road he was shot by attackers who then escaped, according to police and eyewitness accounts. [3, 2, 20] Reports of the first days said the attackers were on a motorcycle and that the gunman was seated on the back of it. [4, 12]
The case was filed at Paltan Model Police Station on 14 December 2025 as one of attempted murder. It named one suspect and several unknown others, as reported. [5, 12]
Police name a suspect; the government offers a reward
Police sources; the Home Affairs Adviser
Police sources told The Business Standard that, after reviewing CCTV footage from the Inqilab Cultural Centre and from the scene of the attack, police had identified Foysal Karim Masud, also known as Daud Khan, as the suspect. The Home Affairs Adviser, Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, announced a reward of Tk 50 lakh for information leading to his arrest. [4]
Reported — published by the reports cited; not yet checked against a primary record.
RAB recovers firearms in Narsingdi
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)
RAB recovered two foreign-made pistols, two magazines, a toy pistol and 41 rounds of ammunition from a marsh in the Narsingdi Sadar area, and arrested one man. RAB said the weapons had been used in the shooting and dumped in the water after it. [7]
Reported — published by the reports cited; not yet checked against a primary record.
That Hadi was shot on Box Culvert Road while travelling in an auto-rickshaw is the account of police and eyewitnesses in every report held. How the attack was carried out, and by whom, is the investigators’ reconstruction, and is reported as theirs.
How suspects were identified
The first identification was reported on 13 December 2025: police sources said that, after reviewing CCTV footage from the Inqilab Cultural Centre and from the scene, police had identified Foysal Karim Masud, also known as Daud Khan, as the suspect. [4] He was the only suspect named in the case as filed. [12]
At the charge sheet the Detective Branch said its evidence included CCTV footage, confessional statements recorded under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, forensic reports on the firearms and bullets, and forensic examination of phones and devices. [21] The reports held do not set out how each accused person was identified.
When police “identify” someone as a suspect, they state their own conclusion. It is recorded here as theirs. Whether a person took part in the attack is for a court to decide.
Arrests and custody
Each custody event below is listed separately, with the authority that acted. Detention, arrest, remand, a recorded statement and a refusal of bail are different steps; none of them is a finding of guilt.

Counts as reported
Officials and reporters have given different numbers. Each is shown as it was given, on its date. No total is derived, and none is current.
- Dhaka Metropolitan Police, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune
- 11 people arrested in Bangladesh. [27]
- A prosecution sub-inspector, as reported by The Business Standard
- 11 people arrested, six of whom had given confessional statements. [24]
- The Detective Branch, at the charge-sheet briefing
- 17 accused: 12 arrested and 5 at large. [21]

- Of the 17 accused, 11 in jail and 6 not arrested. [8]
- The Dhaka Tribune
- Six accused absconding, among them the two men held in India. [28]
What investigators said they found
For each kind of evidence, three things are kept apart: what was reported to exist or be recovered, what investigators say it shows, and what has been independently established. A police statement is strong evidence that police said something; it does not by itself show that what they said is true.
CCTV footage
- Police sources said on 13 December 2025 that police identified the suspect after reviewing CCTV footage from the Inqilab Cultural Centre and from the scene of the attack. [4]
- At the charge-sheet briefing on 6 January 2026 the Detective Branch listed CCTV footage among its evidence. [21]
- No footage has been released by investigators in the reports held, and the project holds no copy. What the footage shows has not been independently established.
Reported — published by the reports cited; not yet checked against a primary record.
Witness accounts
- The public account of the shooting rests on police and eyewitness accounts, as reported. [2, 3, 20] The charge sheet lists 77 witnesses. [8]
- The reports held do not say what the listed witnesses stated, or which accounts investigators relied on.
- No individual eyewitness account is set out here, because none has been checked against its original. Witnesses are not named.
Reported — published by the reports cited; not yet checked against a primary record.
The motorcycle
- bdnews24 reported on 15 December 2025 that the gunman fired from the back of a moving motorcycle while Hadi was travelling in an auto-rickshaw, and that RAB had arrested the owner of the motorcycle used in the shooting. [12]
- According to the Detective Branch, the motorcycle was ridden by Alamgir, whom it named Alamgir Sheikh. [21]
- The reports held do not say that the motorcycle was seized, how it was linked to the attack, or that it was examined. The link has not been independently established.
Alleged — an allegation by the Detective Branch; it has not been established.
Firearms
- RAB recovered two foreign-made pistols, two magazines, a toy pistol and 41 rounds of ammunition in Narsingdi on 16 December 2025. [7]
- RAB said the weapons were used in the shooting. [7] Investigation sources, citing interrogations, said the weapons had been left at a relative’s home in Dhaka and passed from the suspect’s father to his wife’s brother, and from him to a friend in Narsingdi. [22] In April 2026 the Dhaka Tribune reported that the pistol had been traced through sales records to an arms shop in Chattogram. [16]
- On 18 December 2025 an investigation source said the link would be confirmed by ballistic testing. [22] The Detective Branch said in January that forensic reports on the firearms and bullets were among its evidence. [21] No ballistic or forensic report has been published, and the project holds none, so the link between the recovered pistols and the shooting is not independently established.
Alleged — an allegation by RAB and the police; it has not been established.
Cheque books
- RAB said cheque books allegedly signed by the suspect, and electronic devices, were recovered from the three people detained on 14 December 2025. [6, 14]
- The reports held do not record what investigators said the cheque books showed, or any amount.
- Nothing in the reports held connects the cheque books to the attack or to payment for it. At the hearing on the charge sheet the complainant’s lawyer called the cheque seizure “absurd”. [9]
Reported — published by the reports cited; not yet checked against a primary record.
Phones and devices
- Electronic devices were recovered from the three people detained on 14 December 2025, RAB said. [6]
- The Detective Branch listed forensic examination of mobile phones and electronic devices among its evidence. [21]
- No result has been published. The project publishes no phone numbers, messages or location data.
Reported — published by the reports cited; not yet checked against a primary record.
Statements, interrogation and denials
By 29 December 2025 six of the people arrested had given confessional statements before a magistrate, a prosecution official said. [24] The statements reported by name are listed first. Their content is not reproduced here beyond what the record needs.
Statements recorded by a magistrate, reported by name
Confessional statement recorded. Recorded by: Not given in the report held.
Confessional statement recorded. Recorded by: Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam, Dhaka.
· Rubel Ahmed, described as a close associate of Foysal Karim Masud
Confessional statement recorded. Recorded by: Magistrate Md Ismail, Dhaka.
Accounts of interrogation, reported by police or their sources
· Investigation sources, to Prothom Alo
Described how the weapons passed from Dhaka to Narsingdi, citing “interrogations of individuals involved at different stages” of the chain. [22]
Reported — published by the reports cited; not yet checked against a primary record.
· Dhaka Metropolitan Police
Said its account of the suspects’ crossing into India came from confessional statements of people arrested and from sources in border areas. [29]
Reported — published by the reports cited; not yet checked against a primary record.
· Indian authorities, as reported by Prothom Alo
Were reported to have said that both men confessed during interrogation in India. [19]
Reported — published by the reports cited; not yet checked against a primary record.
Denials
· A video presented as a message from Foysal Karim Masud
In a video that circulated online, a man presented as Foysal Karim Masud denied any involvement and said he had been in Dubai. The Federal reported that it could not verify the video. [30]
Unverified — the video’s authenticity has not been established by any source held.
· Foysal Karim Masud, at a court in West Bengal
Asked by journalists about the killing, he said: “I did not do this. I was not involved in such acts.” [19]
Reported — published by the reports cited; not yet checked against a primary record.
A confessional statement under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure is recorded by a magistrate and becomes part of the court record; it can later be retracted or challenged at trial. What police or their sources say a person told them under interrogation is the police’s account, not a judicial record. A denial is the accused person’s own account. None of the three settles the case.
Across the border
Whether, when and how the two men police describe as the shooter and the motorcycle rider left Bangladesh has been a matter of conflicting official accounts. They are set out in the order they were given.
· Claim
Bangladesh Police: Additional Inspector General Khandaker Rafiqul Islam
Said at a press conference at the Ministry of Home Affairs: “We do not have specific information about his last location, but there is no confirmation that he has fled abroad.” [31]
· Claim
Dhaka Metropolitan Police
An additional commissioner said the suspects had escaped to India and gave a timeline of the crossing. The next day the police said the information came from confessional statements of people arrested and from sources in border areas. [29]
· Claim
Dhaka Metropolitan Police: Additional Commissioner SN Nazrul Islam
Said the two men had been helped across by two Indian nationals, and that Meghalaya Police had arrested two people who received them. The Dhaka Tribune reported that Indian authorities did not confirm those arrests. [27]
· Response
Border Security Force and Meghalaya Police, India
The BSF said there was no evidence of anyone crossing from the Haluaghat sector and called the claims “unfounded and misleading”. Meghalaya Police said none of the accused had been traced in the Garo Hills. [32, 29]
· Claim
Md Aminul Islam, in a statement recorded by a magistrate
Said, as reported, that he had helped Foysal Karim Masud flee to India through the Haluaghat border in Mymensingh. [24]
· Claim
Detective Branch: chief Md Shafiqul Islam
Said the two men crossed the Haluaghat border into India on the night of the attack, and that Foysal Karim Masud was in India, not Dubai. [21]
· Later development
Special Task Force, West Bengal Police
Arrested Foysal Karim Masud and Alamgir Hossain near the border at Bongaon, West Bengal, according to its press release as reported. [10, 17] India’s public broadcaster reported that they had fled to India through the Meghalaya border. [26]
· Later development
Dhaka Metropolitan Police
The acting DMP commissioner said police had learned of the arrests from the media and were trying to confirm them formally; an additional commissioner said Indian authorities had not yet confirmed them officially. [17]
· Later development
Inspector General of Police, Bangladesh
Said diplomatic efforts were being made with India for the handover of the two men under the countries’ extradition treaty. [33]
· Later development
The Sentinel, reporting a special NIA court in India
Reported that the court extended the NIA’s custody of the two men, and that they had entered India illegally through the Meghalaya border. [18]
· Later development
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh
Said after the foreign ministers met in New Delhi that both sides had agreed the two men would be returned under the procedures of the extradition treaty. India’s statement on the meeting, as reported, did not address their return. [34]
Current assessment: disputed, with later reports
In December 2025 the Dhaka police account that the two men had crossed into Meghalaya was denied by India’s Border Security Force and Meghalaya Police. [29, 32] In March 2026 Indian police arrested them in West Bengal, and Indian reports said they had entered through the Meghalaya border. [10, 26, 18] That they were in India by March 2026 is now reported from both countries. The route, timing and help described by Dhaka police in December, and the detentions in Meghalaya they reported, have not been confirmed by Indian authorities in any report held, and the December denials have not been withdrawn in any report held. The December claim remains disputed; the arrest is reported. As of the latest report held, in July 2026, the two men had not been returned to Bangladesh. [11]
That a suspect crossed a border, or was arrested abroad, is not evidence that any government was involved in the attack. No investigating agency has alleged such involvement in any report held, and the project makes no such claim.
How the original investigation concluded
The Detective Branch concluded its investigation with a charge sheet against 17 accused, submitted by its inspector Foysal Ahmed on 6 January 2026, with 77 witnesses listed. [8]
Announcing it at the DMP Media Centre, the Detective Branch chief, Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam, set out the police account: that Taijul Islam Chowdhury Bappi, a former president of the Pallabi Thana Jubo League, ordered the killing; that Foysal Karim Masud fired the shots; and that Alamgir Sheikh rode the motorcycle. He gave the motive as political vendetta over Hadi’s criticism of the Awami League and the banned Chhatra League. He said 12 of the accused had been arrested and 5, including those three, were at large. [21] Other reports describe Bappi as a former ward councillor of Dhaka North City Corporation. [28]
The charge sheet in the case record
The charge sheet is the output of the original investigation: the police’s theory of the case and the people they accuse. It is not a finding. The court has not yet decided on it, and the people it names have not been tried.
The complainant’s challenge
On 15 January 2026 the complainant, Abdullah Al Jaber, filed a naraji petition against the charge sheet. [9, 35] His lawyer, Mustafizur Rahman Mukul, argued that it had been submitted “merely as a formality”, that it failed to explain the link between the planners of the killing and the gunmen, that naming only one Awami League ward councillor was “laughable”, and that it did not explain how the attackers escaped after a daylight shooting. He called the seizure of the suspect’s cheque “absurd”. [9]
The Business Standard reported that day that the court had kept its order pending. Later reports all give 15 January as the day the court ordered further investigation and gave it to the CID. [9, 5, 15] The project holds no copy of the order, so its terms, beyond giving the further investigation to the CID, are not known here.
They are the complainant’s arguments, not findings about the investigation. They matter to the investigation because the court sent the case back for further investigation instead of deciding on the charge sheet.
The CID’s further investigation
The CID has investigated the case since the court’s order. Its investigating officer by April 2026 was Assistant Superintendent Abdur Qadir Bhuiyan of CID Dhaka Metro (East). [16] Since then, reports have recorded a further confessional statement, at the end of January 2026, and the arrest in April of the owner of an arms shop, to be questioned about the source of the pistol. [25, 16]
The CID has not published any finding, and the reports held do not say whether it agrees with the charge sheet. Its report has been due at a series of hearings and has not been submitted. [1]
The CID says progress depends on the return of the two men held in India
CID officials
CID officials told the Dhaka Tribune that the legal and diplomatic procedures for extradition had been completed through the Ministry of Home Affairs. Special Superintendent Jasim Uddin Khan said substantial progress could be made if the two principal accused were brought back to Bangladesh for interrogation. [28]

The CID chief says Bangladesh is waiting for India to hand over the accused
Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, chief of the CID
The CID chief said Bangladesh had completed all legal and diplomatic procedures under the extradition treaty and was waiting for India to hand over the accused; he could not say when that would happen. [11]
Reported — published by the reports cited; not yet checked against a primary record.

What remains unresolved
Only questions the investigation record leaves open. The project does not answer them by inference.
What has the CID’s further investigation found?
Why it is open: Its report has not been submitted to the court, and no finding has been published. At the latest hearing on record the court set a new date for it. [1]
Who planned and directed the attack, and did anyone else take part?
Why it is open: The Detective Branch named one alleged planner in the charge sheet. [21] The complainant argued that the charge sheet did not explain the link between planners and gunmen, and that one ward councillor could not account for the attack. [9] No court has made any finding, and the project draws no conclusion of its own.
Has a forensic link between the recovered pistols and the shooting been established?
Why it is open: An investigation source said in December 2025 that ballistic testing would confirm it, and the Detective Branch said in January that forensic reports were among its evidence. [22, 21] No such report has been published.
Have all the accused been apprehended?
Why it is open: The Dhaka Tribune reported in June 2026 that six accused were absconding, counting the two held in India. [28] No later count appears in the reports held.
How did the two men leave Bangladesh, and who helped them?
Why it is open: The Dhaka police account of December 2025 was denied by Indian authorities at the time. [29, 32] Indian reports after their arrest said they entered through the Meghalaya border, but no report held confirms the route, timing or help that Dhaka police described. [26, 18]
Sources and method
- How the record is compiled
- Each police and court action is entered from a report of it, checked against the publication on the review date, and dated by when it happened rather than when it was reported. The same record drives this page and the timeline.
- How claims are classified
- Every fact carries how it is known: an official statement, a report, an allegation (with who makes it), or a dispute (with every side). “Court record” is reserved for facts checked against a court document the project holds; none is held yet. There are no scores or percentages.
- How court records are used
- A court record establishes what the court did — a filing, an order, a hearing — not the truth of the allegations before it. A scheduled date is shown as scheduled until a report of the day records what happened.
- How corrections work
- Corrections are made openly: the corrected fact is shown with a note of what was said before. Earlier records that could not be sourced are listed below as not published, with the reason.
Case record last reviewed . Anyone named on this page, or anyone with a document or a correction, can ask for a fact to be reviewed: see corrections and right of reply and the research methodology.

Not published, conflicts and gaps
- No investigation documents are held
- Every fact about the investigation on this page rests on news reports of what investigators said or did. The project holds no police report, charge sheet, forensic report, CCTV footage or court order, so nothing is classed as a court record or as verified. That will change only when a document has been obtained and checked.
- Names and spellings
- People whom investigators placed at the centre of the case are named as the reports name them; others are described only by their relationship to it, and witnesses are not named. Reports spell names differently: Foysal or Faisal Karim Masud (also reported as Rahul and Daud Khan); Taijul or Taizul Islam Chowdhury Bappi; Alamgir Sheikh in Dhaka police accounts and Alamgir Hossain in Indian ones; Abdur Qadir or Abdul Quader Bhuiyan. The page uses one spelling and does not treat the variants as different people.
- Conflicts between reports
- Arrest counts differ: 11 according to police and prosecution at the end of December 2025, 12 according to the Detective Branch on 6 January 2026, and 11 in jail according to BSS on 12 January. Reports give 6, 7 or 8 March 2026 for the arrest in India. A BSS report of 17 December 2025 said Foysal Karim Masud, aged 25, had been arrested on 16 December; this appears to confuse him with the man of a similar name arrested in Narsingdi that day, and it is not used. A Dhaka Tribune report of 6 July 2026 called Alamgir Hossain the alleged shooter, contrary to the Detective Branch’s account and the paper’s own earlier report; that description is not used. None of these conflicts is resolved here.
- The date of the order for further investigation
- A report on 15 January 2026 said the court kept its order pending that day; every later report gives 15 January as the date it ordered further investigation by the CID. Both are recorded. The order itself is not held.
- Not published: claims of wider responsibility
- Public statements by politicians and others, in Bangladesh and in India, that suggested other people or parties were responsible are not repeated. None was made by an investigating agency in the reports held, and none came with evidence. The unverified video attributed to Foysal Karim Masud also made claims about other people and about Hadi; only its denial is recorded.
- Not published: details from the earlier records
- The site’s earlier case-progress records described weapons, a motorcycle and signed cheques with amounts and details that no report checked for this record gives. Those details are not used. No arrest total from the earlier records is used either.
- Private details
- No addresses, phone numbers, identity numbers, bank details, messages or locations of people are published. Places are given at the level of a district or area. There are no photographs of anyone, no CCTV stills and no map: the project holds no image with documented provenance, and the places in the record are clear in words.
- The unified timeline
- The developments recorded here after the charge sheet — among them the arrests in India — are part of the investigation record and are dated and sourced on this page. They have not yet been added to the unified timeline.
