What happened

Content note

This section states that Hadi was shot and died of his injuries. It gives no further detail of the injury.

On 12 December 2025, the day after the election schedule was announced, Hadi was campaigning in the Paltan and Bijoynagar area of Dhaka, in the Dhaka-8 constituency. [2, 3, 4] At about 2:25 p.m., on Box Culvert Road, he was shot in the head by attackers who then escaped, according to police and eyewitness accounts. [4, 3, 5]

He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, moved that evening to Evercare Hospital and, on 15 December, flown to Singapore General Hospital. [6, 7, 8] He died there on 18 December 2025, aged 32. Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced his death the same day. [8, 9]

The case over the shooting had been filed on 14 December as one of attempted murder. On 20 December a magistrate ordered that the charge of murder be added. [10, 11]

December 2025

The investigation

Abdullah Al Jaber filed the case at Paltan Model Police Station on 14 December 2025, as one of attempted murder. [10, 1] After Hadi’s death, on the investigating officer’s application, Metropolitan Magistrate Siddiq Azad ordered on 20 December that section 302 of the Penal Code, murder, be added. [11, 10]

On 22 December the law adviser, Asif Nazrul, said the trial would be held under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act, 2002, which requires a trial to be completed within 90 days of the police report. [13] The reports held do not record that the case has been sent to a tribunal.

On 28 December Dhaka Metropolitan Police said the two men they named as the main suspects had left Bangladesh through the Haluaghat border into Meghalaya, India. India’s Border Security Force and Meghalaya Police rejected the claim. [14, 15] Both accounts are set out below, under “What the record establishes”; the project does not prefer either.

Police statements

What police say about suspects during an investigation is their account. It is reported here as theirs, with the date they said it, and is not a finding of fact.

6 January 2026

The charge sheet

On 6 January 2026, Detective Branch inspector Foysal Ahmed submitted a charge sheet to the Court of the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Dhaka. It names 17 people as accused, among them Foysal Karim Masud, whom police describe as the alleged shooter, and his parents, and it lists 77 witnesses. [12, 1]

As of 12 January 2026, BSS reported, 11 of the 17 were in jail and 6 had not been arrested. [12] No later count appears in the sources held, so this page gives no current figure for arrests or custody.

The project does not hold the charge sheet. What it contains is known only from these reports, which do not set out the allegation against each accused.

What a charge sheet is

A charge sheet is the police report to the court at the end of an investigation, naming the people the police accuse. It is an accusation. It does not establish that anyone is guilty: only a court can decide that, at trial, and the record shows no trial has begun.

12–15 January 2026

The complainant’s objection and the further investigation

On 12 January 2026 the complainant asked for time to examine the charge sheet, and Magistrate Jashita Islam set 15 January to hear whether the court should take cognizance of it. [12]

On 15 January Abdullah Al Jaber filed a naraji petition, saying he was dissatisfied with the charge sheet submitted by the Detective Branch and asking for further investigation. [16, 17] The reports held do not set out his specific objections.

The same day, on his petition, the court ordered further investigation and gave it to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police. [10, 18, 16] The project does not hold the order, and the reports give no reasons for it beyond the complainant’s petition.

Naraji petition

A naraji (no-confidence) petition is a complainant’s written objection to a police report, asking the court not to accept it as it stands. Filing one decides nothing by itself: the court decides what follows. Here it ordered further investigation.

Cognizance

Taking cognizance is the court’s formal step of taking up an offence on a police report; proceedings towards a trial follow from it. The record shows the court ordered further investigation instead.

Since 15 January 2026

The CID’s further investigation

The CID was directed to investigate the case further and report to the court. At every hearing reported since 3 February 2026, its report has not been submitted, and the magistrate has set a new date. [10, 18, 1]

Latest on record ·
The report is not submitted; the court sets 3 November. The CID does not submit its further-investigation report, and the magistrate sets 3 November 2026 as the new date. The Business Standard reported that this was the 20th time the investigating officer had been given more time. [1]
Next known date

· Scheduled
Date set for the CID’s further-investigation report. Not yet held. [1]

What further investigation means

Instead of deciding on the charge sheet, the court asked for the case to be investigated again. The CID’s report goes back to the same court, which then decides how the case proceeds. Until then, the accusations in the charge sheet are untested.

A court record is not proof of the allegations

A court record can establish that a filing was made, an order issued or a hearing held, and what was formally alleged. It does not by itself prove the allegations it records. And every entry below is, for now, known from news reports of the court’s actions, not from the court’s own documents.

— Police say two suspects crossed into India; Indian authorities deny it

Dhaka Metropolitan Police
An additional commissioner said the suspects had escaped to India and gave a timeline of the crossing. The next day the police said the information came from confessional statements of people arrested and from sources in border areas. [14]
Border Security Force and Meghalaya Police, India
The BSF said there was no evidence of anyone crossing from the Haluaghat sector and called the claims “unfounded and misleading”. Meghalaya Police said none of the accused had been traced in the Garo Hills. [15, 14]

Current assessment: disputed. The accounts conflict, and no document or court finding held by the project settles them. Neither is preferred.

Open questions

What remains unresolved

Only questions the record itself leaves open. The project does not answer them by inference.

  1. What has the CID’s further investigation found?

Why it is open: Its report has not been submitted to the court. At the latest hearing on record, the court set a new date for it. [1]

  2. Will the charge sheet stand, be revised or be replaced?

Why it is open: The complainant objected to it, and the court ordered further investigation instead of deciding on it. That decision waits for the CID’s report. [16, 10]

  3. Who planned and directed the attack?

Why it is open: No court has made any finding on responsibility. The accusations in the charge sheet have not been tested at trial, and the complainant has objected to the charge sheet. [12, 16] The project draws no conclusion of its own.

  4. Have all the accused been arrested?

Why it is open: Six of the 17 had not been arrested as of 12 January 2026. [12] The Dhaka police account of December 2025 that two suspects had crossed into India was denied by Indian authorities at the time. [14, 15] In March 2026 Indian police arrested the two men in West Bengal; as of July 2026 they had not been returned to Bangladesh. [34, 32]

  5. When will a trial begin, and before which court?

Why it is open: The law adviser said in December 2025 that the case would be tried under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act. The case is still at the stage of investigation. [13, 1]

Why justice matters

Justice and due process

A candidate for parliament was shot in the street during an election campaign and died six days later. Whether, and how, those responsible are held to account is a matter of public interest, and the legal process that decides it should be recorded accurately and in full.

Justice, on this page, means due process: an investigation that follows the evidence, a fair trial, accountability where a court establishes it, and protection for anyone wrongly accused. It does not mean declaring anyone guilty before a court has decided. Remembrance does not replace evidence.

About this record

Sources and method

How the record is compiled
Each police and court action is entered from a report of it, checked against the publication on the review date, and dated by when it happened rather than when it was reported. The same record drives this page and the timeline.
How claims are classified
Every fact carries how it is known: an official statement, a report, an allegation (with who makes it), or a dispute (with every side). “Court record” is reserved for facts checked against a court document the project holds; none is held yet. There are no scores or percentages.
How court records are used
A court record establishes what the court did — a filing, an order, a hearing — not the truth of the allegations before it. A scheduled date is shown as scheduled until a report of the day records what happened.
How corrections work
Corrections are made openly: the corrected fact is shown with a note of what was said before. Earlier records that could not be sourced are listed below as not published, with the reason.

Case record last reviewed . Anyone named on this page, or anyone with a document or a correction, can ask for a fact to be reviewed: see corrections and right of reply and the research methodology.

Not published, conflicts and gaps

No court documents are held yet
Every police and court fact on this page rests on news reports of the action, chiefly by BSS, The Business Standard and the Dhaka Tribune. None is classed as a court record. That class will be used only when a charge sheet, order or cause-list entry has been obtained and checked.
Evidence described by police
What police and RAB said they recovered — firearms, cheque books, devices — and what they said it shows is set out, attributed and assessed, on the Investigation page. Details from the project’s earlier records that no checked report gives are not used.
Not published: arrest counts from the earlier records
The earlier records gave 14 arrests by 21 December and 11 by 28 December 2025, without sources or a reconciliation. Neither is used. The only count given is the one BSS reported with the charge sheet, as of 12 January 2026, and it is not presented as current.
The other accused
Of the 17 accused, the reports of the charge sheet cited here name only Foysal Karim Masud, and describe two others as his parents. Others named by the Detective Branch when it announced the charge sheet are recorded, attributed, on the Investigation page; their legal status is not given here until it can be given with a date. The 77 witnesses are not named.
Saheda Parveen
The Business Standard reported on 26 July 2026 that she was arrested on 14 December 2025. The project’s earlier, unsourced records gave a different date. The reported date is given, attributed; it has not been checked against a court record.
Hearings not listed
Reports name further dates set for the CID’s report, among them 19 February, 2 April and 15 July 2026. What happened on those dates has not been checked against a report of the day, so they are not listed as hearings.
The earlier case-progress page
The site’s earlier case-progress records end on 28 December 2025 and carry no source links. Nothing from them is presented as the current position.
Status words
Evidence and legal-status words are written in plain English beside what they mean. They will follow the project’s bilingual glossary once it is published.
