01: Preservation

What the archive preserves

Much of what is known about Sharif Osman bin Hadi, about July 2024 and about the case that followed his death exists in places that do not last: news pages that move or close, social posts that are deleted, videos taken down, photographs that circulate without the name of the person who took them.

The archive keeps that material together with what makes it usable as history: who made it, when and where, where it was published, what it shows, and which events and people it concerns. A record is kept apart from the claims made about it, so that what a document says is never confused with what it proves.

Today the archive is a catalogue. It records the sources, documents and statements the site relies on and links to each at its original address. It reproduces nothing whose creator and permission to publish are not documented, and has not yet made archived copies; both are stated below rather than hidden.

The Archive

What historical material has the project preserved?

Sources, documents, statements and, as their rights are documented, photographs, film and recordings, across his life, July 2024 and the case.

Evidence & Documents

What evidence and documents exist in the Hadi murder case?

The records of the case only, each with what it can and cannot establish and how it bears on each claim.

A record can be both: a court order is an archive document and part of the case’s evidence. It is catalogued once and linked from both. For the case, see Evidence & Documents.

09: Media

Photographs, film and recordings

41 photographs are reproduced; 3 videos are and 5 audio recordings are catalogued with original source links.

The photographs are catalogued on Photos, each with its creator, the page where it is published and its licence, and linked to the events, people and pages it belongs to.

The video archive holds 3 source-linked records. Approved platform recordings can be watched through an embed; the original files remain with their publishers.

The audio archive catalogues 5 publisher-hosted episodesabout July 2024. No audio file is held locally, and none is presented as a contemporary recording of July events.

Other photographs of Hadi appear elsewhere on the site as working material, credited “source and reuse rights not yet documented”. Until their creators and permission are documented, they are not catalogued here, and the archive shows no image in their place.

His spoken words are known from print. The statement record holds 6 speeches and addresses and 1 video statement as newspapers reported them. Those quotations remain tied to the reports that printed them, on Speeches & Ideas.

Images of injury or death are never shown as thumbnails, previews or illustrations, here or on any child catalogue.

10: Method

How the archive works

Provenance before publication, rights before reproduction, and originals never overwritten.

Sourcing
Material enters the archive from its first publisher wherever possible: the court, the agency, the outlet, the person who made it. A compilation is a lead to the original, not a source in its place.
Provenance
Every record keeps where it came from: the original address, the publisher, the creator, and the dates it was made, published and obtained. A record without provenance is not published.
Rights
Being available online is not permission. A photograph, film or recording is shown only when its rights are granted, licensed, in the public domain or not required. Otherwise the archive cites it and links to it, and says why it is not shown.
Public and restricted records
A record is public, public as metadata only, redacted, restricted or unavailable. Restricted records — unreleased material, private information, confidential submissions — are not shown or counted on any public page.
Originals and derivatives
An original is kept exactly as received and never overwritten. Thumbnails, monochrome versions, crops, transcodes, OCR text, transcripts and translations are separate files, each recording what it was made from and how.
Integrity
Each file the archive holds is recorded with a SHA-256 hash. A matching hash shows that the stored copy has not changed since it was recorded; it says nothing about whether what the file shows is true.
Transcripts and translations
Bangla originals are kept in Bangla. Every transcript and translation says what it is — official, checked by a researcher against the original, or machine-made — and machine output is never treated as authoritative.
Duplicates
The same material collected from several addresses is one record, with each address kept. Two outlets carrying the same agency report are two sources but not two independent confirmations.
Privacy and graphic material
Preservation does not require publication. Addresses, phone numbers, identity documents, medical records, the whereabouts of witnesses and anything identifying a minor are not published. Images of injury or death are never shown as thumbnails or previews.
Corrections
A wrong date, name, caption, place, creator, rights status or event link is corrected with a note saying what changed and when; the earlier version is not silently rewritten.
Not yet recorded
No archived copy has yet been made of any source, so no record carries a capture date. Photographs, videos and audio catalogue entries have stable archive references; their catalogue date is distinct from the date of the historical event or recording.
