The full case record, with its legal provisions

14 December 2025 – 6 January 2026

How the case reached court

The case was filed by Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of Inqilab Moncho, at Paltan Model Police Station on 14 December 2025, two days after Hadi was shot. It was filed as a case of attempted murder. [3, 1]

In the first days, a Dhaka magistrate’s court granted the investigators remand of people they had detained. [5] Hadi died on 18 December 2025, and two days later a magistrate ordered that the charge of murder be added to the case. [6, 2] On 6 January 2026 the Detective Branch submitted its charge sheet to the court. [7]

What the investigators did

A court is not an investigator

Investigators — the police, the Detective Branch and now the CID — collect evidence, identify suspects and submit reports. The court receives those filings, decides applications such as remand and bail, issues procedural orders and, if the case reaches trial, decides guilt. This page records what the courts did; what investigators did is on the Investigation page.

20 December 2025

The charge of murder added

On 20 December 2025, two days after Hadi’s death, Metropolitan Magistrate Siddiq Azad of the Court of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Dhaka, ordered on the investigating officer’s application that section 302 of the Penal Code, which concerns murder, be added to the case. [2, 3]

The order is known from a report by BSS, the national news agency, published the next day, which said it was made “on Saturday”, and from a later report by The Business Standard. The project holds no copy of the order, so it is recorded as reported, not as a court record. [2, 3]

What adding section 302 means

The case was filed while Hadi was alive, as one of attempted murder. Adding section 302 means it is now pursued as a case of murder. The order changed the offence the case concerns; it is not a finding that any person committed it.

6 January 2026

The charge sheet

On 6 January 2026 Detective Branch inspector Foysal Ahmed submitted a charge sheet to the Court of the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Dhaka, naming 17 people as accused and listing 77 witnesses. [7, 1]

On 12 January, after the complainant asked for time to examine it, Magistrate Jashita Islam set 15 January to hear whether the court should take cognizance of the charge sheet. [7]

Charge sheet against 17 accused (Not held — known from reports)

A charge sheet is not a verdict

A charge sheet is the police’s report that they have found grounds to accuse the people it names. That 17 people were named in it is a procedural fact. It does not mean that any of them has been found guilty: only a court, at trial, can decide that.

Taking cognizance

Taking cognizance is a court’s decision to proceed on a police report. Charges can be framed, and a trial held, only after it.

15 January 2026

The complainant’s objection

At the hearing on 15 January 2026, the complainant, Abdullah Al Jaber, filed a naraji petition against the Detective Branch’s charge sheet, saying he was dissatisfied with it and asking the court for further investigation. [8, 9, 10]

His lawyer, Mustafizur Rahman Mukul, argued that the charge sheet had been submitted as a formality and did not explain the link between those who planned the killing and the gunmen. [8] These are the complainant’s arguments. The court has made no finding on them; they are set out in full on the Investigation page.

What a naraji petition is

A naraji (no-confidence) petition is a complainant’s formal objection to a police report or charge sheet, asking the court not to accept it as it stands. Filing one does not show that the investigation was wrong, or that the objections are right. It asks the court to decide what happens next.

15 January 2026

Further investigation ordered

On the complainant’s petition, the Court of the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Dhaka, ordered further investigation and gave it to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police. [3, 11, 9]

The Business Standard reported on the day that the court had kept its order pending; later reports all give 15 January as the date of the order. [8, 3] No copy of the order is held, so its terms, beyond giving the further investigation to the CID, are not known here. The reports held record no decision on the charge sheet itself.

Further investigation

Further investigation is a new round of investigation ordered by the court after a police report has been submitted. The agency given it reports back to the court, which decides how to proceed once that report is before it.

From 15 January 2026

The CID’s report before the court

Since the order, the court has set a series of dates for the CID’s further-investigation report. At each hearing on record the report was not submitted, and the magistrate set a new date. [3, 1]

Outlets have counted the deferrals differently: the Dhaka Tribune called the hearing of 9 February 2026 the sixth and that of 26 February the ninth, and The Business Standard reported on 27 September that the investigating officer had been given more time for the 20th time. The counts are given as each outlet gave them. [11, 12, 1]

The CID’s investigating officer by April 2026 was Assistant Superintendent Abdur Qadir Bhuiyan of CID Dhaka Metro (East). [13] The CID has not placed any finding before the court, and none has been published.

Orders about people in custody

Remand and bail orders

Courts have also made orders about people held in the investigation: remand for questioning, granted to investigators by magistrates in Dhaka, and a refusal of bail by the High Court Division. [5, 22] Each order concerns one person’s custody, not the case as a whole. Statements recorded by magistrates are set out on the Investigation page, without their content.

Proceedings outside Bangladesh

Foysal Karim Masud and Alamgir Hossain were arrested in West Bengal in March 2026. A court in West Bengal sent Foysal Karim Masud to judicial custody on 22 March, and on 5 April a special NIA court in India extended the National Investigation Agency’s custody of the two men by nine days. [25, 26, 27] These are proceedings in India, separate from the case in Bangladesh, and are not entered in its register.

Bangladesh said in April 2026 that both governments had agreed to the two men’s return under the extradition treaty; in July the CID chief said Bangladesh was still waiting for India to hand them over. [28, 29] No extradition proceeding before a court, in either country, is recorded in the reports held.

The people in the case, with dated legal status

Remand and bail

Remand is a court’s permission for investigators to hold and question a person in police custody for a set number of days. Bail is release from custody while the case continues. Neither is a finding of guilt or of innocence.

Cause list
The list a court publishes of the cases it will take up on a day. An entry shows that a case was listed, not what was decided.
Warrant

Framing of charges
The court’s formal statement of the charges an accused person will answer at trial. It comes after cognizance and before evidence is heard.
Trial

What no court has decided

No court has heard evidence at trial, so none of these has been decided. Where a filing alleges something, it is described as the filing’s account.

  • Whether any accused person is guilty of the killing.
  • Who planned or ordered the attack, and whether anyone else took part.
  • Whether the account in the Detective Branch’s charge sheet is correct.
  • Whether the complainant’s objections to the charge sheet are right.
  • Whether the disputed December 2025 police account of two suspects crossing into India is true.

A court record can establish that a filing was made, an order issued or a hearing held, and what was alleged before the court. It does not prove the allegations it records. Every action above is, for now, known from reports of the court’s actions, not from the court’s own documents.

Documents

Court documents

6 documents of the proceedings are known to exist from reports; the project holds none of them yet. A copy is published only once obtained lawfully, checked and, where needed, redacted. An original in Bangla will be shown as the record, with any translation labelled as the project’s.

Open questions

What remains unresolved

Only questions the court record leaves open. The project does not answer them by inference.

  1. When will the CID’s report be placed before the court, and what will it say?

Why it is open: At the latest hearing on record the report was not submitted and the court set a new date. No finding of the CID has been published. [1]

  2. What will the court decide about the charge sheet?

Why it is open: The court ordered further investigation on the complainant’s petition. The reports held record no decision on the charge sheet itself. [3, 9]

  3. Will the case be tried by a Speedy Trial Tribunal?

Why it is open: The law adviser said in December 2025 that it would be; no report held records that it has been sent to one. [4]

  4. Will the two accused held in India be brought before a court in Bangladesh?

Why it is open: Bangladesh said in April 2026 that their return had been agreed; in July the CID chief said Bangladesh was still waiting for India to hand them over. [28, 29]

About this record

Sources and method

How the record is compiled
Each police and court action is entered from a report of it, checked against the publication on the review date, and dated by when it happened rather than when it was reported. The same record drives this page and the timeline.
How claims are classified
Every fact carries how it is known: an official statement, a report, an allegation (with who makes it), or a dispute (with every side). “Court record” is reserved for facts checked against a court document the project holds; none is held yet. There are no scores or percentages.
How court records are used
A court record establishes what the court did — a filing, an order, a hearing — not the truth of the allegations before it. A scheduled date is shown as scheduled until a report of the day records what happened.
How corrections work
Corrections are made openly: the corrected fact is shown with a note of what was said before. Earlier records that could not be sourced are listed below as not published, with the reason.

Case record last reviewed . Anyone named on this page, or anyone with a document or a correction, can ask for a fact to be reviewed: see corrections and right of reply and the research methodology.

Not published, conflicts and gaps

No court document is held
Every court action on this page is known from news reports of it. The project holds no court order, charge sheet, petition or order sheet, so no entry is classed as a court record and no document is shown. An entry will be reclassified only when a document has been obtained and checked, and the report it rested on will stay listed.
Official cause lists and case status
No entry from the judiciary’s published cause lists or case-status records has been matched to this case, and the project does not hold the court case number. Until one is matched, hearing dates, presiding officers and short orders rest on court reporting.
Dates set but not checked
Some dates the court set for the CID’s report have no checked report of what happened on them. They are listed in the register as unrecorded, and are shown neither as held nor as missed. Outlets also count the deferrals differently; each count is given as it was reported.
The date of the order for further investigation
A report on 15 January 2026 said the court kept its order pending that day; every later report gives 15 January as the date it ordered further investigation by the CID. Both are recorded. The order itself is not held.
Not published: unsourced court entries in the earlier records
The site’s earlier case-progress records listed court actions without sources: an order of 21 December 2025 barring the prime suspect from leaving the country, confessional statements by three people on 25 December 2025, two men sent to jail on 26 December 2025 after remand, and the case’s assignment to a Speedy Trial Tribunal on 23 December 2025. None has been checked against a report for this record, so none is published here. The last is recorded instead as the law adviser’s statement of 22 December 2025.
Proceedings outside Bangladesh
The Indian court orders concern the custody of two men arrested in India, in proceedings there. They are kept apart from the case in Bangladesh and are not entered in its register.
Private details
No addresses, phone numbers, identity numbers or medical details are published, witnesses are not named, and the content of confessional statements is not given. People are named only where the reports name them and investigators placed them at the centre of the case; others are described by their relationship to it.
